Composer gives conductor a great big sloppy kiss
mainAt the Vienna #Konzerthaus Sofia Gubaidulina thanks Vadim Repin and conductor Andres Mustonen after the concert with the ORF Radio-Symphonieorchester Wien-RSO Wien for the very successful performance of Dialogue: me and you, concert for violin and orchestra no. 3 (2018). This was the conclusion of four Gubaidulina events this weekend.
At least she is generous and appears grateful. Ligeti, of course, always had sunflowers for his performers, even in recording sessions as he hurridly re-wrote passages and passed the still wet scores to Salonen et al to conduct direct on to disc. On several occasions I have witnessed composers coming to the platform after the premiere of their latest instantly forgettable magnum opus looking like they want to punch the conductor / soloist / ensemble.
I have worked with composers that are extremely grateful that I have spent the time and effort to bring their work from the page to the audience, and I have worked with composers who seem to resent the fact that they can’t just program a machine to play their precious piece and have to suffer a human being screwing it up. I wonder which I’d rather work with…
Really? Your headline is desperate and rude to Gubaidulina.

The embrace is probably little different from how Anita LW will behave to Norman later this week :

Perhaps “Big Sloppy Kiss” is a figure of speech on that side of the pond? That’s the only way I can explain its use to describe this video clip.
No it isn’t.
Oh. Well, I tried.
