Dracula wins Bartok competition
mainThe winning entry in the Bartok World Competition is titled Drumul Dracului, Romanian for The Devil’s Road.
The winning composer, in a field of 200, is the Hungarian Dániel Dobos.
The jury was chaired by Thomas Ades.
Perhaps you could clarify which Bartok competition that is, since there is also a “Bartok international opera conducting competition” at the Hungarian opera in Cluj, Romania.
Dobos is a composer of entertainment stuff:

Uncooked, sentimental music, influenced by film music and a vague idea of music history. Apparently, nothing better could be found among the entries. For a competition called after Bartok, a truly embarrassing result.
Huh? What’s the matter with that…? You say “film music” as if that’s a negative thing.
As a matter of fact, the estimable American composer William Kraft never composed anything better than his score for the movie “Fire and Ice” : https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLA053CEFC232537FC.
It may be one of the greatest compositions by a 20th-century American, no less. Just listen to the instrumentation here

Yes, that is well-made. But film music is mood painting and nothing more, and subservient to the movie. Concert music (classical music) has to stand on its own and we expect much more musical substance from it than from film music. The gifts of film music composers could have developed in the field of concert music if concert life would offer opportunities for alternatives to modernism and its derivates.
For the same reasons photography is not painting and we don’t hang photos next to paintings in the Louvre as if it were the same genre.
That is Angela Morley’s orchestration.
I don’t think so. Is it? I believe William Kraft did it all by himself. This page says nothing: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Angela_Morley
No, sorry, Angela orchestrated that music.
