The next music director of the Orchestre national de Lyon is to be the violinist and conductor Nikolaj Znaider, according to local reports.

Leonard Slatkin retired from the post in mid-2017 and the orchestra has taken its time in making an appointment.

Lyon Opéra  also has a new conductor, the Italian Daniele Rustioni.

It’s an interesting choice. I have been impressed by what I have heard of his conducting from radio/online concert broadcasts. He seems still to have some technical problems to work out, but his musicality produces rewarding results. I wonder, however, how many weeks he will dedicate to the orchestra.

  • Ruben Greenberg says:

I have never heard of him, but it is a fine orchestra and I hope this works out well. Mr. Slatkin and them have had a fine and long relationship and he leaves them in much better musical shape than they were in when he arrived.

  • Beinisch says:

    Wonderful.
He is a wonderful violinist and a very very good conductor.I have heard him a lot playing and conducting big pieces and with great success

  • Tamino says:

OK, so Lyon took on the task to act as Znaider’s academy orchestra. He will (hopefully) learn to conduct there. It’s always nice to see orchestras taking interest in educating the next generation.

  • B. Jenkins says:

Very wise choice by Lyon. Nikolaj Znaider is a first rate musician. I, for one, look forward to what he will do there.
