Maestro move: Bram Tovey has a new orchestra
mainThe recently retired music director of the Vancouver Symphony is taking charge of the Rhode Island Philharmonic.
Tovey, 65, is also principal conductor of the BBC Concert Orchestra in London. More here.
In the fall of 2016 I heard the Rhode Island Philharmonic give under Bramwell Tovey’s direction a deeply moving performance of the Mozart Requiem. Sonority, pacing, characterization, all pointed to a synergy between very fine players and singers, and a conductor on top of his game.
So it looks like it’s a fairly part-time but probably really good orchestra of Boston-area freelancers/moonlighters. And for Tovey a nice second job conveniently near his Boston/NEC base.
Bramwell Tovey is affiliated with Boston University, not the New England Conservatory.
