mainThe Polish trumpeter, composer and free jazz pioneer Tomasz Stańko died today in Warsaw.
Working across many genres from Kryzstof Penderecki to Indian mysticism, his releases on ECM Records were always fresh and surprising, underpinned by tremendous melodic invention.
Ahh, what a pity. I can’t say I was wild about his music, but he did try to do something different that was also – usually – quite listenable.
Probably an much underrated musician. One of the great voices of post-Miles trumpet in european Jazz, along with Kenny Wheeler, Palle Mikkelborg…
