I don’t really know why she’d bother. Verona has nothing to do with serious opera these days
It pays very well and, if you enjoy applause, there’s nowhere else on earth where you can get as much of it from so large an audience
With torches.
A certain 23-year-old New Yorker once sang La Gioconda there … .
Andrea Gruber?
Teeheehee!
Up until the 1980s Verona attracted the world’s biggest stars every summer, and the audience back then was a good mixture of opera buffs and tourists bussed in from Lake Garda. Now it’s almost exclusively the latter.
La Gioconda with Maria Callas and Richard Tucker!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It’s a nice place to be, it pays well, it’s not an onerous long rehearsal period- all these things matter too when you’re enduring the arduous life of an opera singer.
What about acoustics?
They are exceptionally good for an outdoor venue of this size, which was one of the main reasons why an opera festival was put on there in the first place.
She has become a sell out money hound towing around Yusif. Pathetic. Sad.
Sorry I cannot agree with your comment. A singer’s career does not have to be that of a nun with a vow of poverty. If Anna Netrebko takes the leading role in a production at a large festival where equally large sums are made then why shouldn’t she be well paid?
Why shouldn’t she enjoy the financial rewards of her career? In lots of other walks of life prominent people earn much more than Miss Netrebko and nobody questions it. Besides, I don’t question her commitment to her art in the light of performances such as her Lady Macbeth at Covent Garden.
.. instead of singing in Bayreuth (what she will do next year anyway..)..
Yusif is a good singer, but he’s never the one carrying Anna, and his engagements would be a lot less but for Anna, which means other tenors’ careers are being negatively affected by Anna. But I’ve written of nepotism elsewhere but it’s accepted in classical music even more so than in the film industry, except there are a lot more opportunities in film than in classical music. So such is life.
Who are these other tenors? There are plenty of jobs for a great spinto tenor, and I can’t think of any excellent ones who are underemployed. But I can think of plenty that are worse than Eyvazov and regularly appear at top houses.
Arena di Verona is synonymous with Vulgar. Fits like a glove then.
