I remember KZ doing this piece at the Barbican with the LSO and the composer in late 80s. I think the three Lenny symphonies plus works like Songfest were always gripping with the composer at the helm but are much less so under other conductors. They simply need his dynamism to keep the interest going.
Of course there are masterpieces like Chichester Psalms and Violin Serenade which are timeless but the works where Lenny was trying to write “The Great American Whatever” (as Lucas Foss said) don’t seem to fare as well.
