Another new job for Alan Gilbert
mainThe former music director of the New York Philharmonic has been named principal guest conductor of the Tokyo Metropolitan Orchestra, starting next April.
That will keep him partly occupied until he takes over as chief conductor at the Hamburg Elbphilharmonie in September 2019.
Never much cared for Gilbert with the NY Phil. It won’t take long for audiences in Tokyo and Hamburg to experience Gilbert-remorse.

He has been principal guest conductor in Hamburg for many years. They know him well and wouldn’t have taken him if they didn’t like him.
Tokyo Met SO, like the other Tokyo orchs, has about seven conductors on its masthead. Not a job, just a way for the orch to claim prestige.
His Nielson cycle is the best thing the NYPO have recorded since the 80s – in my humble opinion.
So, people can’t spell his name right either.
My apologies. Dyslexic foreigner on this end.
COMPLETELY agree about the Nielsen cycle! Hope more people can hear it.
