They have waited until the last minute in the hope that Dmitri Hvorostovsky might make a spectacular comeback but Vienna has now accepted that his severe illness means the Russian baritone will sing no more opera.

Taking his place in Un ballo in maschera in the first half of November will be Marco Caria, a young Sardinian who has been singing in Vienna since 2010.

Can anybody shed any light on how Hvorostovsky is going with his treatment?

    • Zelda Macnamara says:

It’s up to the family to provide information when they feel it’s appropriate. It’s not up to us to intrude. However anybody who saw the Grafenegg concert will know why he has withdrawn from staged opera. We can just hope that he will be able to give concerts and make recordings.

How sad, may the good lord twist his fade!

  • Surf City opera fan says:

Let’s all pray for a rapid and complete recovery. He is such a great singing actor, it would be a shame for us to not see him again.

  • Zelda Macnamara says:

Cancelling staged operas was understandable, but the latest news is that he has also cancelled the two concerts this month, in Bucharest and Moscow. It just gets worse and worse, and it’s heart -breaking.

  • Wilma Reicher says:

We are praying for him and his family. He is fighting so hard and we wish that he will get better! The best wishes to him and his family! Wilma and family, Austria, Graz
