Arkansas names a Belgian arts chief
mainThe former artistic director of the Sydney Festival, Lieven Bertels, has been chosen to head the Momentary, a space for the visual and performing arts in Bentonville, Arkansas. The venue is due to open in 2020.
Anything to do with Walmart? They like to spend on the arts. There is an art gallery there I think that was financed by Mrs. Alice Walton, daughter of the founder of Walmart, Sam Walton. ASDA in the U.K.
Crystal Bridges is a fabulous museum in Bentonville, Arkansas. The Walton family started their store Walmart there. Bentonville is a rapidly growing city, thanks to Walmart headquarters. Companies wanting their products sold in Walmart need to have a local office in Bentonville, from what I have heard. There are new orchestras in the region, among them, the Arkansas Philharmonic conducted by Steven Byess–a visionary music director in synch with the needs of the growing community and age categories. (Will be back with them in November). If you get an opportunity to visit Bentonville, do take in a visit to Crystal Bridges, which is the brainchild of Alice Walton, Sam Walton’s daughter. She has gathered some of the World’s finest artwork. Congratulations to Lieven for taking the Momentary into his musical responsibilities. Will be terrific.
