Death of a Tchaikovsky winner
mainThe superb cellist Natalia Shakhovskaya, first winner of the cello section of the Tchaikovsky Competition in 1962, has died in Moscow at the age of 81.
A student of Mstislav Rostropovich, she taught at the Moscow Conservatoire from 1974 and at the Queen Sofía School of Music in Madrid from 1994.
And if I’m not mistaken, the people who finished behind her in that competition included Leslie Parnas, Natalia Gutman, and Lynn Harrell. Beautiful playing in the video.

Parnas and Gutman, yes… Harrell’s name doesn’t show (although they only list the top 3 prizes)
Harrell didn’t advance to the final round in 1962, but not to worry, he continues to enjoy a magnificent career, well into his 70’s.
Yes, he does seem to have managed all right for himself 😛
Very sad news…
RIP
