Sicklist: Bryn Terfel is out of Vienna’s Ring
mainSir Bryn Terfel has called in sick, cancelling his appearances as Wotan and Wanderer in Wagner’s Ring at the Vienna State Opera.
He will be replaced by Egils Silins in Das Rheingold on April 30, by Tomasz Konieczny in Die Walküre on May 1 and Siegfried on 7th May and by Thomas Johannes Mayer in the second cycle.
Apparently, even immortals are not necessarily eternally healthy.
Staatsoper was Using him as Aushängeschild to sell this Ring again, alter Schinken.
And i Fell for it. Coming from Toronto Just to hear him ( WHO wants to See him?) Darn, darn, darn. I will stop now being a Fan WHO follows him everywhere. Paid a lot of Money for Tickets. Have Seen this Ring already twice. . After all, there ist Matteis, and other baritons. He is Losing it anyway
Pi.. off
Isn’t his partner, the harpist Hannah Stone, due to give birth around now? I’m not being cynical, just curious. Any expectant father would want to stay close after all, in which case why call in sick? Then again, he may well be unwell of course, no one is immune to life’s ailments.
Except, apparently, Lang Lang, who is it okay to laugh about being out with arm problems for three months after a month-long fly break. At least around here.
Welcoming a newborn infant into the home when you’re 52 would be enough to make anybody feel off colour!!
By the time he’s 60 he’ll be exposed to the panoply of childhood illness. But he may have actually retired before that!
as yogi berra said, deja vu all over again….
