Jaap Van Zweden cancels again
mainThe Dallas Symphony has posted on Instagram – though not on its website – that:
Music Director Jaap van Zweden will be unable to conduct the Dallas Symphony Orchestra the week of April 6, 2017 due to family reasons.
Gustavo Gimeno will conduct April 6-8.
The unspecified family reasons date back to the beginning of last month.
As per his biography on wikipedia, he has an autistic son. I believe I have seen references to this elsewhere
Not only that, he has set-up (together with other sponsors) an institution for autistic children and youngsters where they can develop skills to live a better life when grown-up, the Papageno Foundation, unique in the Netherlands. (It was opened some years ago by the queen, and got a lot of positive publicity.) Music, in all its forms, is an important tool on the curriculum, as one could expect, and it appears to be a most effective one.
Bravo to the maestro for taking the initiative on this important work and putting his son before his own career. How rare is that?!!
“unspecified family reasons”
It’s none of our business. It’s between him and his employer.
I never really understood why management thinks it’s alright to share the personal medical conditions of their conductors, as though the public, just because we pay $100 for a seat, have a right to know the conductor’s latest proctology exam. Trump just had his doctor write a note that he was the “most fit presidential candidate in history”. And he holds our nuclear codes!
I guess they think it’s OK because so many private details of artists’ salaries are routinely put into the public domain, why not day’s off? This is the world we live in; zero privacy.
Just couldn’t resist getting a Trump bash in there!
Conductors are human too….
He seems to be in fine health and good spirits conducting LA Phil this whole week.
The Maestro showed-up in Los Angeles this weekend. To great effect.
Review: With his L.A. Phil program, here’s what a man of mystery portends for
