The board of directors of Los Angeles Opera has renewed Placido Domingo’s contract as general director for another three years, to the middle of 2022, when he will be 81.

The tenor turned baritone joined LAO as artistic consultant in 1984 and as artistic director for two years before becoming general director in 2003.

His territorial greed and their lack of strategic thought are just extraordinary…

1984 is right. It should be noted, though, “Los Angeles Music Center Opera,” as it was called, did not present its own work until 1986. Peter Hemmings was in charge, getting ready for the launch of the city’s first world-class and stable opera company. In 1984 and 1985, respectively, the association presented the Royal Opera (London) and Deutsche Oper Berlin, with Domingo singing for both visits and fundraising for the future local company. He deserves much credit, right from the start.
