Sir John Tomlinson: Even if I’m doing Wagner, I’ll sing a Figaro aria to get going
mainThe great bass-baritone is 70 today.
Here’s an intensive Wagner interview he gave in 1991 to Bruce Duffie. Click here.
And here was the 2009 Lebrecht Interview which the BBC has taken offline. Maybe they’ll reinstate for the day?
Happy birthday, John Tom!
Why they should take your interview off line and deprive us of hearing it, especially today, God only knows!
A lovely, warm-hearted man, a lovely warm-hearted singer: Happy Birthday!
Greatest Wotan ever. Barr none.
Sir John Tomlinson is one of several operatic big names who could do a lot to undermine many of the negative and prejudiced attitudes to opera amongst those with little or no real experience of it. Unfortunately, I have not seen him on TV outside specialised music programming and attitudes today are more likely to be shaped by the wretched “Go Compare” commercial.
The days of popular but reasonably intelligent chat shows with varied guests seem to be over.
Excellent point Maria, can’t argue with that.
