There are 68 classical stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Who knew?
mainMost were honoured in 1960, when the Walk was laid down and classical musicians were still household names.
It has been thin trickle in recent years, culminating in yesterday’s addition of Gustavo Dudamel.
Here’s the list in full.
Or better yet, here’s the full list: http://www.walkoffame.com/starfinder/list
No Korngold, Waxman, Tiomkin or Herrmann? But at least Lawrence Welk made it.
Wow! 1960 seems to be the bumper crop year for classical music inductees. Can anyone explain this phenomenon?
II think it was explained quite clearly in the first sentence of the post.
Yes, of course it was and somehow that nuance escaped me. But still, someone must have put some thought into whom to include for this category.
Yo-Yo Ma and Lang Lang should be added asap
If they are really interested, it can be arranged rather easily because $30K should not be a problem for either one of them.
By 1960, they forgot that Nino Martini, Grace Moore, and Miliza Korjus actually starred in big studio Hollywood musicals in the 1930s.
Hollywood Walk of Fame… what on honor. Have your name eternally trampled on by tourists and merchants. And if you’re just lucky, a Scientology headquarters might open up right by your star!
I’m sad to see a person like Conrad Salinger missing; he did most of the orchestrations for the Arthur Freed Unit at MGM during the golden period of musicals at that studio. It was a huge job and he was a tremendously talented, influential and largely unrecognized musician. And he had trained at the Paris Conservatoire. Salinger died by his own hand in 1961.
Andre Previn said of him, “Conrad Salinger could take a little tune like “Twinkle, Twinkle” and make it sound like Daphnis and Chloe”.
Almost all on the list Norman links to were inducted when the walk was begun in 1960.
The “thin trickle in recent years” is in fact just 5 people (not including Dudamel) in 56 years.
Those 5 are Bocelli (2010), Domingo (1993), Mehta (2011), Morricone (2016), Sills (1977).
And of these five only three are genuinely classical musicians because Bocelli is a essentially a crossover singer and Morricome is primarily a film composer.
Even worse than you thought…there are only 58…
