She was a master. I will never forget taking a train ride with her and her husband from a competition and talking about music. One of the last legends of her time with her standard-settings of Bach and Shostakovich.
I heard her and met her briefly when she played at the Swansea Festival some weeks before her death. We managed a sort of conversation in rather stilted German but she was delighted to autograph my set of the Shostakovich preludes and fugues. In fact, she signed it twice. The whole evening and encounter felt like – and, indeed, was – a brush musical history.
