Thomas Ades opera tops Salzburg’s summer bill
mainThey rolled out the menu today and tickets are immediately available.
The highlights are a new opera by the English composer Thomas Adès based on a surrealist film, The Exterminating Angel, by Luis Buñuel. There will also be a Gounod Faust – a first for Salzburg, with Piotr Beczala in the title role – and Richard Strauss Die Liebe der Danae, conducted by Franz Welser-Möst.
The Vienna Philharmonic will play concerts with Daniel Harding, Zubin Mehta, Riccardo Muti and Mariss Jansons.
This is an interregnum summer artistically. Markus Hinterhäuser takes over as artistic director from 2017.
Tickets here.
Good for Adès. His work belongs to the best available…. which says a lot about the available, or rather: the known available. Cudos for the Salzburg Festival to program something like that.
How sad that in the opera list they are unable to show LEONARD BERNSTEIN along with Thomas Adès, Richard Strauss, Charles Gounod, Wolfgang A. Mozart, Giacomo Puccini, Otto Nicolai and Jules Massenet. Thank the lawyers.
Um, I see that Leonard Bernstein is prominently displayed as West Side Story is being performed with Bartoli and Dudamel…

The reason of course is that it’s not supposed to be “his” work but that of the librettist too, and in fact of the choreographer and one other person, four in all, as if the other works in the list involved nobody but the composer.
VERY interesting programme! Would love to go if work allows!
Let’s hope he finishes it in time…
