Slipped Disc was invited to observe Ukraine’s 24th independence anniversary concert last night in Kiev but was unable to attend.

Amid much verbosity and political bombast, music duties were conducted by Kirill Karabits with the Warsaw-based I, Culture orchestra, cilmaxing in the finale of Beethoven’s ninth symphony.

You can watch the full concert here. Beethoven starts at 55 minutes.

So they don’t have an orchestra in Kiev that they have to borrow one from a NATO country? So much for independence…

I don’t understand why NSOU could not have done this, as it properly should.

Abuse of Beethoven and Schiller. (again)
They said “all men become one”. not “all men segregate into nations under questionable concepts of ethnical separations when there are none and start wars over it.”

  • Leon Bosch says:

Here is a link to the I Culture Orchestra’s double bass section giving a performance of some Piazzolla, arranged for 8 double basses:

It was a real pleasure to work with such motivated young musicians and they truly excelled in those legendary recitatives.
