Just in: Garanca cancels all engagements
mainThe Latvian mezzo-soprano Elina Garanca has issued the following statement:
‘Due to personal reasons, I much regret to withdraw from my professional activities until further notice. My mother is suffering from terminal cancer, so I will now stay by her side in Riga. I am very sorry for any inconvenience this may cause and ask for your understanding in this difficult time.’
The Salzburg Festival has replaced Elina with Angela Georghiu in Massenet’s Werther and Elisabeth Kulman in a song recital.
Good for her – love and family responsibility should always be first and she has the guts to suspend her career for a while.
Yes, good for her. Im supportive that she puts her performance schedule on indefinite hold to spend this time with her mother. She is a terrific singer – we wont forget her and she will get a huge welcome back on stage when the time comes to return. I wish her mother the best in this battle.
Please, correct the name of our star mezzo soprano, it’s Elīna Garanča not Elena Garanca.
Mr Lebrecht, please correct the spelling of Ms Garanča’s first name to Elīna, rather than Elena.
My heart goes out to her and her family in this difficult time…
This is a brave action of a singer who is dealing with a heart-breaking situation.
My thoughts and prayers are with her.
Am just reading this & I salute Elina for her decision to stay by her mother’s side. My heart goes out to her family in this trying time. She’s a great singer with a wonderful talent. I don’t expect to ever have the good fortune of seeing her perform in person, but I DO have a couple DVDs, including “Carmen”, which I thoroughly enjoy. God bless you, Elina.
Sincerely hope that you and your family have the strength to go thru
this painful stage of life. Your voice has given me great happines often in
in difficult times.
To anyone who could answer this – would love to have an update as to how Elina’s mother is. I sincerely hope all is as well as can be expected.
