A grand chanteur has died
mainSad news of the death at 77 of Richard Anthony, one of very few French singers to break into the global market.
In 1962 he scored an international hit with an American ballad, 500 Miles. ‘My mother, who is English, used to sing it to me,’ he explained.
He went on to cover other Anglo hits.
And which other balladeer dared to open a song with a snatch of Smetana’s Moldava?
I used to make a couple of arrangements for one of his albums about 10 years ago…
Disappointed they did not convert “500 Miles” to metric.
