Norman, I believe that nowadays the word copain is only used to mean boyfriend.
Not necessarily. And the plural is never used to mean boyfriends (except perhaps when uttered by a bigamist). Les copains means friends.

Les copains d’abord…a good english equivalent might be “buddies.”
petit-ami = boyfriend; petite-amie = girlfriend. The pronounciation is the same in both cases.
For our UK friends, copain(s) can also mean mate(s) in the sense of friend.
