And the 150th-year Sibelius Medal goes to…
main… Sir Simon Rattle, in recognition of his ‘indefatigable’ performances of the Finnish composer’s works with the Berlin Philharmonic.
The award was made by the Jean ibelius Society of Finland and presented by the Finnish ambassador in Berlin, Päivi Luostarinen.
I would cite him alone on the wonderful recordings he made of the complete Sibelius symphonies and a few other bits and pieces for EMI with the terrific City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra back in the 1980s. Great stuff from a great band 🙂
His CBSO recording of the Fifth is what turned me on to Sibelius as a teenager. Still my benchmark.
