The classical Black Friday results are in
mainThe top selling classical albums in the US last week were (according to Nielsen Soundscan):
1 Christmas at Downton (Warner) 6610 units
2 Ultimate Bocelli (Decca) 3740
3 Andre Rieu (Decca) 1736
4 Glass piano etudes (OMM) 937
5 C’mas in Harvard Square (Decca) 832
6 Trio Medieval (ECM) 820
7 Joshua Bell (Sony) 284
Does the Downton album include a free out of place water bottle?
One issue is marketing: just getting out the news that there is a new release.
I consider myself a bit of a fan of Trio Mediaeval, but until today’s posting I had no idea that they had a new album out. And I follow music websites and Amazon a lot more than the average person. In the prior century, I would have seen copies of the album in the bins at my favorite CD stores, but now…
…and not a mention of The Wexford Carols – one of the most ambitious and original Christmas CDs on the market this Christmas.
So only nr 5 is serious music, and it lags far behind in sales.
