Mr Clarinet has died
mainBuddy DeFranco, who led clarinet playing into bebop after swing era of Artie Shaw and Benny Goodman, died on Christmas Eve, aged 91.
He played with Gene Krupa, Tommy Dorsey, Count Basie, Oscar Peterson, Billie Holiday and all the greats of his time, retiring at 89.
One of the greatest jazz clarinetists, and the first “modern” one, that brought the clarinet into the bebop era. I might add that the man was charming, full of wit and kindness. Rest in peace, Buddy.
