The hugely popular Canadian soprano Measha Brueggergosman has never had it easy. After emergency heart surgery in 2012, she managed to conceive twice, only to have her hopes dashed before term. Now she has announced in a local interview that she’s expecting again.

‘I know we’re living on borrowed time,’ says Measha. ‘I have lost two babies and nearly died myself at one point — there are no guarantees. The time you have is the time you have. I am really grateful and aware of how blessed I am.’

The whole classical community will be  praying for a happy outcome.

What’s next? We’ll all participate in the process?

  • V.Lind says:

So, not the WHOLE classical community, then.

She’s certainly an interesting artist who has experienced some tough breaks in life. I do wonder why she’s never broken through in the US like she has in Canada (and to a lesser extent Europe). She was with DG for a while but that deal quietly came to an end.

Canada presenters and orchestras are required to promote native talent, of course. But for someone with such mainstream potential, it seems strange that she’s never sung at the Met or several other big American houses.

Do you think she has a big enough voice for the Met? I have heard her — except barely — do the Beethoven 9th a couple of times. However singing programmes like Barber songs, she is a joy. Not sure how much full opera she does — some, certainly, but I can’t think of her at the Canadian Opera Company off the top of my head.
