Was this the Year of Peter Sellars?
mainThe wild man of the opera stage has been fairly subdued of late. Aside from a brilliant speech at the Polar Prize, he has kept well below the radar.
He’s planning a dance event in New York and a residency at English National Opera early next year, but this hardly goes down as a limelight Sellars year – unless you count him as the hidden hand in the Met’s long-running Klinghoffer furore.
So why has Musical America today named Peter Sellars Artist of the Year?
The award is the more perplexing since it has always previously been given to a musician.
Well deserved!
A string of passion successes this year and his residency at ENO begins in a few weeks with the stage premiere of Adams ‘The Gospel According to the Other Mary’. Not to mention two revivals of Tristan, and Hercules in Toronto. He’s seems to be pretty busy and present!
One new production, a handful of revivals and some future plans? No, I would not call this “The Year of Peter Sellars.” Very talented artist and very well respected in his field, but “Artist of the Year?” No.
