The parade STARTS at the Natural History Museum (with overnight blowing up of the balloon-floats), goes south down CPW – missing Lincoln Center – continues south on Broadway, switches to 7th Ave, and ENDS at Macy’s on 34th St.
The video is on CPW across from the museum at the start of the parade.
Typically cheesy
So is every silly thing Renee Fleming does in her personal life newsworthy?
She was the first opera singer to perform at the parade in many, many years – to around 30 million viewers.
I’m all for opera singers getting exposure to a wider public than merely those in opera houses. But Ms.Fleming does seem to be overdoing it somewhat. From what I can recall, this seems to coincide with her decision in 2010 to break with her PR manager of the previous 15 years, the highly regarded Mary Jo Falcone. It was reported at the time that Ms. Fleming had “decided she wanted to take this part of the operation in-house.” Perhaps the house requires some spring-cleaning!
Her website lists an extremely well-known PR company. If she ever intended to do this in-house, perhaps she didn’t think it succeeded.
Looking at that website, I assume the PR company is PMK*BMC. I note that the first page of its website describes the company as “The Leading Authority on Popular Culture and Entertainment.” Culture, though, seems not to include classical music as of the 28 photos of the artists listed under “Talent”, I cannot pick out one of Ms. Fleming – nor any other classical artist. Only pop artists and movie personalities.
As I do not live in the USA, I had not heard of this company before. The bio of the PMK*BMC contact person listed on Ms. Fleming’s website, Kirsten Foster, also mentions only her working on specific pop press and media campaigns – e.g. a tour by Justin Bieber. Ms. Falcone on the other hand looks after a select group of classical clients on long-term contracts.
My assumption is that Ms Foster only works on specific projects for Ms. Fleming rather than general media representation and that press work is handled by an office set up, as stated earlier, by Ms. Fleming – hence press enquiries are directed to press@reneefleming.com. But perhaps someone in the media can elaborate further.
