They don’t like to be called the clowns of the orchestra. Or an ill wind.

They have feelings.

Hundreds of bassoons, literally hundreds, gathered at the 43rd annual meeting of the International Double Reed Society at New York University.

  • JBBaldwin says:

Those look like oboes to me…

  • Eric says:

I imagine they’re most angered by the fact that the photo is of oboes, not bassoons.

  • Bill H. says:

    Hautboy, somebody made a mistake….

  • Anne says:

Oh dear! Norman doesn’t know his bassoon from his oboe.

  • David Pickett says:

No! This is a photo of the creche. Oboes grow up to be bassoons!

    • Anne says:

So, presumably, violins grow up to become cellos and basses, the viola being the obnoxious adolescent stage?

      Now I understand.

  • Derp says:

An ill wind…that would be the oboe. Angry bassoon fail.

  • William Safford says:

It was a very happy week for all the oboists and bassoonists (and performers on the contrabassoon, English horn, oboe d’amore, bass oboe, Heckelphone, etc.) in attendance at the annual IDRS conference.

There were many concerts, recitals, lectures, seminars, master classes, tributes, a competition, reading sessions, vendors, and even a flash mob.

I enjoyed performing with Contraband (mentioned in the article), as well as in a contrabassoon quintet recital.
