I have known Antony Hermus for a number of years and followed his progress with great interest. He conducted a wonderful Ballo in Maschera for the Reisopera a few years ago, and triumphed in the first production of the ‘new’ Reisopera (Tristan und Isolde) after the subsidy cuts almost dragged us under. Antony is personally responsible for the survival of most things operatic in Dessau, and fought like a tiger to preserve what he believes in. My guess is that he is taking some time out to concentrate on his conducting, and giving the politics a break. One thing is for sure: not only will he return to the Reisopera in the future, but we will see him on stages and in orchestra pits with first class orchestras around the world. Antony conducts Cinderella with the Concertgebouw Orchestra on 19th of October 2014 and was recently recording Diepenbrock with the Bamberger Symphoniker. Judging by his track record, ‘giving up’ is his last intention. Let’s call it ‘ambition’instead!
