Just in: Vienna Opera ends season on record high
mainOverall takings are up 1.3% to a record €33.5 million.
Audience numbers also up: a record 603,652 vs 599,525 the previous year.
Capacity for opera performances was 99.67%. Unbeatable.

Erneut Einnahmen- und Besucherrekord an der Wiener Staatsoper 2013/2014
In der Spielzeit 2013/2014 konnte die Wiener Staatsoper erneut einen Einnahmenrekord von
33.509.760,85 Euro erzielen (2012/2013: 33.060.588,41). Insgesamt 603.652 Gäste, was einen
Besucherrekord in der Direktion Dominique Meyer bedeutet (2012/2013: 599.525), besuchten
297 Opern-, Ballett-, Kinderopernvorstellungen und Matineen auf der Hauptbühne (2012/2013:
296), 46 Vorstellungen im A1 Kinderopernzelt (2012/2013: 42) sowie 24 Matineen im Gustav-
Mahler Saal (2012/2013: 23). Die Auslastung betrug 99,0 % (2012/2013: 99,2 %), die Auslastung
der Opernvorstellungen liegt bei 99,67 %.
Erfreulich ist auch die Steigerung der Anzahl an verkauften Kinderkarten: In der Saison
2013/2014 wurden 9.513 Kinderkarten (2012/2013: 7.330) vergeben. Dazu kommen in beiden
Saisonen rund 7.000 Kinder in den beiden Vorstellungen von Die Zauberflöte für Kinder am Tag
nach dem Wiener Opernball.
And also ‘ hats off ‘ to the musicians ,who are also part of that success story.
…… and to the Viennese, who – together with international tourists – cultivate their classical music institutions, crisis or no crisis. If forced to choose between buying the much needed overcoat or opera tickets for the family, they choose the latter (which accounts for the slightly less chique dress code there nowadays).
Also it must be said that the varied programming and the qualities of the conductors and orchestra much contribute to the house’s viability in the 21st century. Opera is not dead… it’s merely sleeping at some places.
