Maestro moves: Barcelona buys Japanese once more
mainThe next music director of the Barcelona Symphony and Catalonia National Orchestra (OBC) will be Kazushi Ono. He starts in 2015, succeeding Pablo González Bernardo. Before him, the chief conductor (2006-2010) was Eiji Oue.
I saw/heard him do a decent rendition of Mahler 5 in Vienna (with that Slipped Disc fave band, the VSO).
I also heard him conduct the VSO in a Brahms concert in Tokyo’s Suntory Hall last year. Boring and uninteresting summed it up. Almost walked out before the end. I recalled another all Brahms concert in the same hall 20 years or so earlier when the BSO with Abbado and Brendel were stunningly magnificent. Unfair comparison, of course, but how does a Vienna orchestra on tour make standard repertoire Brahms plain boring?
