The veteran conductor Rudolf Bibl died in France on Friday, aged 87.

A student of Hans Swarowsky, Bibl held posts at various Austrian companies before becoming permanent conductor at the Vienna Volksoper in 1973. Over the next 44 years, he conducted no fewer than 2,273 times.

His last performance was Die Csárdásfürstin on New Year’s Day this year.
