The Staatsoper has announced its reopening next Monday, December 13, with Don Giovanni.

In the following performances of Verdi’s Don Carlo, the designated conductor FW-M is unwell so music director Philippe Jordan will jump in. María José Siri will step in for an unwell Asmik Grigorian.

I assume that also means he won’t be conducting Mahler’s 8th.

better anyway – totally overrated but liked in his home country

  • Patrick Vienna says:

Reading these expert comments about FWM, he seems to be a terrible conductor. How come then that the Cleveland Orchestra, one of the best band in the world jeep on renewing his contract for the last 25 years?

  • Mark says:

The mentality of the Cleve Orchestra management is one that eschews criticisms. By not renewing his contract, it would add credence to the many voices who felt FWM should not have gotten the position in the first place. There have been successes over the years, but several mediocre performances as well. Listening to the recent in house CO recordings don’t alter my impressions. They’ve garnered some positive reviews, but I find most of them uninteresting.

That said, I’ve heard his Mahler 9th with the CO, and felt it was second to none. Most likely it would have been a very good performance with the VPO.
