This video is a very clear statement that they don’t expect their audience to know the sound of timpani, piano or even string instruments. Terminology familiarity is also not assumed.
Explain? Your comment makes no sense. I thought the performance of this song — a meditation on a story of love and tragic loss — had the emotional impact of an operatic aria, and I found it very moving.
I find Ex Lax more moving
Sorry to hear of your gastrointestinal issues.
This piece of music causes me discomfort. The point is not that I do not like the music (it is just trashy pop etc.). I would not mind because tastes are different and there will be a lot of people who will like it.
What causes the deep discomfort is that the video clearly demonatrates that they have no ideo what the text is (or should be?) about and what symphony means. There is no need to abuse the picture of a symphony orchester playing (abuse because they obviously have _nothing_ to do with the music of the song). The director of the video seems not to have a clue that symphony derives from “agreement or concord of sound” or “harmonious”. A lot of pictures may come in mind how to illustrate the symphony, the beeing one of a couple. If they wanted to illustrate this by playing music together why not by playing the music we hear?
“… they have no idea what the text is (or should be?) about and what symphony means”
Well actually ‘they’ do. ‘They’ wrote the song (words and music) and directed the video and here they are talking about it, for anybody with an open mind and the least bit of curiosity: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hmwr3mWdPc0
Well, that’s four minutes of my life I will never get back.
Of you are into pop songs including the word “symphony” this is musically a lot better: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1lyu1KKwC74&ab_channel=TheVerveVEVO
I couldn’t disagree more. This is the same 2 bar phrase repeated ad nauseam. And even that was borrowed from the Rolling Stones.
That video is like a commericial except no one knows what they are selling. And the music is not interesting.
I didn’t know BLM also sponsors classical music.
Cretin.

« I didn’t know this symphony, but it’s 4’ 6’’ too long. »
Great fun and how interesting that a young singer (or songwriter) would use “symphony” as a metaphor. As Chuck Berry said: Hail, Hail Rock ‘n Roll.
Zubin Mehta is conducting real symphony, live stream from La Scala —

The song is an excellent one, and the video is excellent too; all the essentials of a tale of love and loss condensed into 4 minutes, and well acted down to tiny details (e.g. the one-second shot of the female policeman about to break the news). Are SD commenters so heartless and so unable to acknowledge merit in a contemporary song? And does no-one see that watching an orchestra playing while hearing something different is part of the point? Here’s a more understanding and intelligent view: https://www.classicfm.com/discover-music/music-theory/deep-musical-analysis-clean-bandit-symphony/
My kids will tell you that this song comes on in my car pretty frequently…. It’s great. Clean Bandit are classically trained and super talented. So there.
Just when one thinks that “art” cannot become more inane, this sort of drivel comes along
Type Clean Bandit into SD’s search box and you will see that Mr Lebrecht was posting quite appreciatively about this group as far back as 2014. They are great, and I wish I had heard about them earlier than two days ago. I will be checking out more of their MVs on YouTube, along with my current enthusiasm, the hr-Sinfonieorchester with Andres Orozco-Estrada.
Grace Chatto, the cellist in Clean Bandit, is also a member of the cello group Massive Violins, and some SD commenters may find this YT video more acceptable: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hstRYPxb5d4. It has less than 3000 views (not a billion), which elitists may take as a recommendation.
music for profit only. I lament the passing of Rondo Veneziano. Those were the days (my friend)
You actually like souped-up versions of baroque classics? And are unable to appreciate this artfully composed and authentic contemporary song? Well, different things move different people, I suppose.
