mainThe Metropolitan Opera has rolled out five Sills winners this year instead of the usual one. The award recognises ‘extraordinarily gifted singers with rising Met careers.’
The 2021 winners are:
– sopranos Erin Morley and Brenda Rae
– countertenor Anthony Roth Costanzo
– tenor Ben Bliss
– and bass-baritone Ryan Speedo Green.

I agree, prizes should be based on financial need, not talent, and auditions and casting should be made based on each singer’s prior year tax filings, the singer with the least reported income gets the highest paying role.

The money for the award comes from a targeted endowment. In other words, it is a fund that can be used only for this specific award and not for Met operating expenses.
^ otherwise you can bet that they’d have kept it — if not because they need it, then to avoid giving anything to artists.

Oh isn’t that cute, another worker from New York that’s been paid more than the met musicians. Someone that learned to stretch his eye brows by making his mouth too big. And I just wonder, has he been in Joshua Bell’s apartment, and could he please fix his sink, because when his head bobs that much on stage, it might cause all barber’s in New York to give up their profession, and he’ll just tell them to call it cutting your loses.
All are deserving.
I’m here to wonder why so little attention is paid by this website to Franz Schubert, whose birthday is on January 31? I see next to NO TRIBUTES for this great composer.

Great singers, but Anthony Roth Costanzo is 38 years old, won Operalia in 2012, and has been singing at the MET since 2011. Wonder how long one’s career is “rising” before it has ‘risen’. I’d consider him a well-established star countertenor at this point.
Agreed – and one could say this about all of these singers. Morley, for example, sings at most of the major European houses – she just finished a Rosenkavalier at Vienna State Opera. (Just to be clear, I think she’s a stunning artist – just not exactly an “up and comer.”)
Out of all the things Norman has posted through the years, the subtle reference of “let them have cake” in the picture might be his best.
