Going from bad to worse, I see.
Another gimmicky attempt to exploit a dead genius who does not need promotion.
One can only think they are counting on the stupid to
buy into the nonsense of a vastly overrated piano player.
But for me GG will always remain one of the greats, evergreen, a pleasure to rediscover, a marvel of charisma, technique, & taste. Among his achievements: attracting crowds of unprecedented size to keyboard Bach, which he liberated from the tyranny of harpsichordism prevalent in the 1950s, when he began.
The strength of his musical personality has rendered many of his fans fanatically Gould-centered, not such a great thing but to me the hostility beamed from some quarters is much more puzzling. Is this because of his mannerisms? His extra-musical personality? Is it that hard to leave such things behind?
There is little hostility just a respect for the music . For those that knew him in the 1950s
in Toronto Gould was indeed a brilliant pianist.Slightly different but no better or worse
than a few of the top boys .The hostility, if such comes when a piano player confuses
himself with being the composer of the work
performed and then takes the wildest liberties.
Under the mantle of eccentricity the times were ripe for all his nonsense— talking and singing to cows etc….I doubt if any hostility was due to his mannerisms ,,,if I do recall correctly didn’t De Pachman trade on being odd and have quite a career ..Gould didn’t liberate anything…..and if one really wants to hear how the Bach might have sounded you have to go back to Landowska or Turek.

I can’t see the point of this when there are films of Gould himself playing.
I think they’ll need to generate a holographic audience to go with it.
Will the hologram grunt? So pleasant to listen to!!
Let’s not forget that GG LOVED technology and gave up live performance for it. He was a master editor – with scissors, splicing tape no less and spent hundreds of hours piecing together his CBC documentaries – Idea of North etc, with its “contrapuntal dialogue” style (and amazing use of Sibelius’ 5th Symphony Finale at the end, plus those he did on Casals and Stokowski, in the same style.
Even if he never touched a keyboard and only did radio docs, he’d be remembered as unique. GG’s estate sanctioned the hologram tour likely for this reason.
Gould’s Canadian cohort Jordan Peterson talks about the importance of competence, not power. Both these men are at the top of the “hierararchy” of competence. And Gould
was very sexy to boot, you guys need to be reminded. Or maybe you are just jealous of competent men?
