The Korean opera singer Sumi Jo, while serving on the Reine Elisabeth jury in Brussels, took time out with the Seoul media to announce the ‘Sumi Jo International Singing Competition in Castle.’

It will take place next July in a yet-unnamed chateau in France.

‘I have been preparing the competition to discover new talents by utilizing my juror and competition experiences and know-how,’ said Jo.

  • Paul Terry says:

Perhaps the Strawbridges could host it.

  • Lisa says:

    Great.

  • Maria says:

How many competitions do we need? Certainly in Britain and most of Europe, singers on the middle level of a career need solid work after this pandemic and competition winners not always the answer to the problem or who deliver the goods. Not every singer can be a star or an elite singer, but yet still have a fine career.

    • Ann summers dossena says:

Brava Maria. It’s the same in North America. I think teachers seem to promote the competitions for singers to win money to study, and the singers become comfortable in the format. At some point, they will wake up to auditioning for work. There have been some singers waiting too long to start working, they’ve lost the time for careers.

  • Anthony Sayer says:

Now that’s a lass I’d have liked to have worked with.

  • Shalby Nugent says:

You can fly into France, get a driver to take to a castle/(chateau), stay in luxe accomdations, eat devine food, and be part of a quasi-narcissism fest.

It appears elitist and perhaps for trustfunders-wealthy men and women?

    • Jonathan Sutherland says:

      Exactly.
It smells a bit like Verbier to me.
Except Sumi had a decent career a few millennia ago.
Martin T:son Engstroem is a career arts administrator who has the dubious distinction of engaging such personarum non grata as James Levine, Charles Dutoit and Valery Gergiev.
Maybe it is a case of “let them eat foie gras”.
Too much funny money and not enough transparency.
      Music’s own ‘Succession’ Gojo?
