Mexico conductor is cleared of charges

PRs for Iván López Reynoso tell us he has been cleared of ‘abuse of power’ charges by an ethics committee at Mexico City Opera, where he is music director. The charges were not of a sexual nature.

Oddly, no-one is being allowed to see the judgement so all we can add to this description is the line put out by his PRs that ‘the complaint did not refer to any type of conduct related to harassment or sexual abuse and was rather related to a disagreement (or disapproval) regarding an expression made in a personal capacity to the complainant.’

All it takes is Mexico is to have a friend in a higher office and offer a little kickback here and a little kickback there and they’ll even be kind enough to make the body dissapear for you.
The issue here is that Mr Reynoso made a mockery of, what once was a serious and honorable arts institution. Not to mention the unions representing the arts organization who suddenly folded and shut their mouths. just another normal day in Mexico. shameful!!!

    • Triquet says:

Yes, Rafa, all you say is possible, and as well in the other direction, you pay a litte something or ask a favour in order to take someone’s job by slandering them with lies.
Orchestra and chorus union had no business getting into it, she was a dancer no? Not an orchestra member or a chorister. On top it was a personal matter outside of work, and the maestro had no hiring/firing power over the dancer. Facts are vital.

It can also make a 29 year old with little training be appointed music director of Mexico’s premier opera house. The corruption in this country is something scary.

    Dear Mr. Lebecht,
May I respectfully ask who is Ivan Lopez Reynoso? I hadn’t heard about him until now and frankly don’t know what his accomplisments are.
I don’t mean to be disrepectful to the mexican readers of this site but why do they have come here to air their dirty laundry? I’d wish I could read exciting and interesting news about their fabulous country rather than cheap inconsequantial and uniteresting gossip.

Mexico City Opera, based at Teatro Bellas Artes, has been (under different names) programming opera since 1840. What happens to this company or its music/artistic director is relevant.

  • Pepe Cassano says:

What is sad, pathetic and shameful is today’s cancel culture bandwagon. Let’s just cancel anyone who has a brilliant career because we are jealous, jilted or both. There has to be a better way to live an adult life and sift thru actual facts rather than look for spectator “entertainment” and especially thru this site.

  • Rafa Figueroa says:

In other words, we are to believe that this talented young conductor who did NOTHING wrong was falsely and unjustly accused and slandered because of jealousy and a ‘cancel culture’ bandwagon… while at the same time he sat in front of an ethics committee, who acquitted him of doing nothing. Yet the verdict remains confidential, except of course, for the portion of it that was used by his PR to convey his impeccable behavior.
This is by far the the most ridiculous laughable and surreal story I’ve ever heard ….

    • Pepe Cassano says:

I was not aware that a relationship between two consenting adults was wrong. It is wrong however, to slander someone after a breakup. That’s it and that’s all.

  • AD says:

    Me Lebrecht:
Ivan Lopez Reynoso has too many sycophants in Mexico who publicly will say he is a genius, Karajan reborn, and defend him
even if he were a murderer otherwise they wouldn’t work (considering there is only one opera house and a handful of orchestras in all of Mexico). That’ll give you and idea of the power he can exert on singers.
On the other hand Pepe Cassano, who claimed in another post that you tend to sensationalize the content you post on this site, happens to be one of those desperately-job-seeking singers ….
