The government is investigating the music industry over allegations that artists do not receive a fair share of streaming royalties.

It has been made clear that special attention will be paid to the rights of ‘session musicians’, which includes orchestral players. At present many receive nothing from streaming. This could yield an uptick to musicians’ income.

Ironic that this appears the same day as Apple Classical expands into the android market. Orchestral musicians are paid ” equitable remuneration” a micro-payment every time their recordings are broadcast on radio but not a penny from the streaming companies not even “Spotify Radio”. This is because the legislation has not caught up with the digital era.
Streaming is set to be the number one method of music consumption as radio listeners dwindle and new cars don’t have radios installed anymore. This needs to be urgently addressed by the government to prevent even more harm to our classical music industry.

Expansion of Apple Classical is so easy when you don’t have to pay the musicians isn’t it! The only “featured artist” on a symphony recording is the one who didn’t contribute a single sound in the studio…. The conductor.
They are the only one paid by the streaming giants the rest of the orchestra are free!
