Composer Jonathan Bailey Holland was today named dean of the Bienen School of Music at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, starting in September.

He is presently head of the Carnegie Mellon University School of Music in Pittsburgh. He says: ‘The Bienen School has displayed a commitment to widening the lens through which we define the art form and is well-positioned to continue this necessary work as we move toward a future that demands excellence, creativity, tenacity and compassion.’

Excellence? Isn’t that elitist?

  • John says:

He was just appointed head of Carnegie Mellon’s music school a year ago, and has only been there since August. Is this a big trade-up?

    • Wheezie says:

Wokeism is in fashion so they are grabbing all the George Jeffersons that they can.

      • Disgusted says:

        Racist.

Nothing else but blatant racism and it’s disgusting.

      • William says:

As a black man who has been lover of classical music and has performed in Europe, this is a disgusting comment to see. I demand the administrators of this site delete this comment and ban the individual (or bot?) who made it. Please don’t allow what is normally good reporting on the classical world here be tarnished because of idiots like this. Bad enough this beautiful music which we have enjoyed and performed and inspired (ie Dvorak 9 et al) is seen as blatantly racist. Keeping this comment up just perpetuates that myth.

Shame on the individual who wrote it and shame on Slipped Disc for allowing it!!

    Optics!

    Oh geez…

  • Plush says:

NU no longer a great music conservatory and has not been for the last 10 years. DePaul University and Roosevelt University under Heny Fogel snatched NU’s best professors and they have real performance depts. DePaul outshone NU when they built their new music building with upwards of 5 new concert halls. NU docked the Lusitania of a building on the lake shore and called it a day. Present Dean a non entity. Maybe this new man will revitalize a moribund program. NU not nearly as great as they think they are.

  • Truth seeker says:

    Congratulations!

  • Musician who hates prejudice says:

I’m an African American who has loved classical music and performed in Europe for 2 decades. I must say that while I enjoy the news on Slipped Disc, the nasty racist comments have been on the rise here, particularly responding to articles like this where gifted and professional people of color or women attain leadership positions. The comments about “wokeism” and political correctness is absolutely shocking. If these kind of comments are permissible to the administration of Slipped Disc, please let us know and I will stop coming to this site for my classical news and I will encourage others to do the same. The ADMINISTRATORS have the power to make the bigotry stop, and if you can’t see it then you are dumber than I thought (until now, going through some of the articles and the comments made, I respected your intelligence). I strongly encourage you to reign in on those who seek to ruin this site by filling it with signs of their deep ignorance and hatred. Perhaps writing an article to lay down rules (as other social media pages, etc. do) that certain comments against people are not acceptable here. Then going through all the derogatory comments about people of color and women that are on here. The first suggestion is absolutely the right thing to do. The second suggestion will take a while…you have a LOT of cleaning and deleting and banning to do.

Do the right thing, Slipped Disc!!!
