  • Sam McElroy says:

That voice. That repertoire. Just fills me with such sadness at what Russia can be, yet is. Why, oh why…?

    • Sue Sonata Form says:

Ditto. Not to mention seeing the gorgeous Dmitri again. Don’t forget that Russia is ruled undemocratically by a vicious, unelected autocrat. And for hundreds of years prior to that they lived under the Tsars and had no political autonomy.

  • Nicholas says:

Happy birthday SVR and memory eternal. DAH belongs in the pantheon alongside Ruffo, Warren, and Merrill. Memory eternal.

  • Richard Cumming-Bruce says:

I don’t listen to a lot of Rachmaninov but I desperately miss Hvorostoski – the finest Verdi baritone since at least Bruson and taken from us cruelly young. His performances in Rigoletto and Traviata were, for me, definitive.

  • MMcGrath says:

I do so miss this Russian singer!!

  • Uncle Sam says:

Here’s another stunning recording of the same area from one of those great singers of Soviet era, whose voice and artistry remains unforgettable for those who – like myself – grew up with stuff like this being broadcast on radio and TV in the former Soviet Union:

And one more clip, fairly recent, to celebrate Rachmaninov and to celebrate the spring – with the help of the eternally-young Rene Fleming and Evgeny Kissin 🙂
