There is discomfort on flute networks at the discovery that a US professor sacked for sexual misconduct has been hired by an international jury where he will have unmonitored contact with young contenders.

Bradley Garner, a Cincinnati flute virtuoso, was fired by New York University four years ago, after allegations of misconduct were made against him by nine students. He was also removed from Juilliard’s tutor list.

He has now been announced as a judge in next year’s International Franz and Carl Doppler Flute Competition in the Philippines. Not a major competition to be sure, but still cause for concern.

UPDATE: Hours after this post appeared, Garner’s nname was dropped from the jury.

Why is anyone surprised? You people kept James Levine on the podium, knowing full-well what a predator he was, for decades.

Who are “you people”? James Levine was kept on the podium by the MET, not NYU or Juilliard. I agree that he should have been gone a lot time before he left, but you’re blaming the wrong institutions.

After all of those allegations, why Garner has any career at all remains a mystery. Curious how some people get cancelled within minutes and others manage to hang on and even thrive.

Shades of the conclusion of “Tar”?
