The conductor Nicholas Chalmers has resigned abruptly after ten years as artistic director of Nevill Holt Opera.

He says: ‘I am aware that Nevill Holt Opera has today released a statement about the content of the 2023 season. I have played no part in these decisions and they are a separate matter to that of my resignation. I hope that I can collaborate with the artists, orchestras and creatives in another capacity in the near future. I stand with them in solidarity in these challenging times.’

Go figure. he went on to say:

NHO was established with the principle that Opera, Education and Community would be given equal weight in our work. It is therefore fitting that my last performance with NHO will be conducting our version of one of the great operas, The Magic Flute, on 30th March in Rugby at the conclusion of our education tour in which 1,200 primary school children will be taking part – in Grimsby, in Hull, in Bridlington Spa, in Northampton, in Corby and in Rugby.’

It looks like a clash of priorities.
