Bayreuth is in a letter flap.

An academic project to collate and publish all of the Maester’s 10,000 letters has run out of money and there may be no further delivery.

Funding at the Institute for Music Research of the Julius Maximilians University in Würzburg has run out, and Bayreuth is appealing for donations for it to continue.

Anyone got a spare stamp?

  • STEPHEN BIRKIN says:

Not sure whether anyone would want to read 10000 letters, whoever wrote them. I’d settle for a one-page summary!

  • Alex Winters says:

I can live without all of the Master’s letters. I would however be willing to contribute to the costs of publishing the correspondence between his daughter-in-law and “USA”.

  • Paul Dawson says:

I trust that NL will publish the (presumably inevitable) gofundme link.

  • Nicholas says:

To quote the great Oscar Levant: “Sorry kid, I bought a postage stamp this morning and it broke me.”

  • TruthHurts says:

Could this be Big Karma punishing Bayreuth for its past 30+ years of pathetic Ur-Eurotrash productions?????

  • CYM says:

Is the ‘Letter Für Eliszt’ included in the collection ?

  • Hugo Preuß says:

This is not a Bayreuth vanity project. This is a serious academic research project, collecting and editing a historical-critical compilation of Wagner’s letters. It has been funded for many years by the “German Research Foundation”, the major source of funding for academic projects. And it is not immediately clear why they would stop the project half way through. Makes no sense, and I mean this as a professional academic, not as someone interested in music.
