Hong Kong Sinfonietta changes hands
OrchestrasAfter 20 years with the popular and progressive Yip Wing-sie, probably Asia’s best known woman conductor, the orchestra will change direction later this year.
The new music director is the German violinist and conductor Christoph Poppen.
This should have been Ken Lam. Such a shame.
Yip Wing-sie could have enjoyed a career almost anywhere but she chose to remain in Hong Kong. Having returned from New York to become Resident Conductor of the Hong Kong Philharmonic in the mid 1980s, she became Music Director of the Guangzhou Philharmonic before taking over the Hong Kong Sinfonietta in 2002 which she has since developed into an excellent ensemble with innovative and interesting programming.
Christopher Poppen has been the orchestra’s Principal Guest Conductor since 2015. He obviously knows the musicians and Hong Kong extremely well and has conducted some very fine concerts.
