When asked to review compositions by a living musicologist, my inclination would be to catch the night train out of town and not approach a window before daylight. Musicology has degenerated in the past two decades into factional wars, with one American sideshow even arguing that it’s not necessary to read music in order to obtain a musicology PhD.
Krzysztof Meyer is, however, no ordinary musicologist….

K.Meyer wrote excellent bio book about his teacher D.Shostakovich. Highly recommend to read.
Real musicology is underreported. Sideshows are overreported, with more than a sprinkling of schadenfreude.
Did you see the program for the 2022 AMS/SMT conference in New Orleans? American music scholarship has mostly become social justice.
New publications by university presses include plenty of excellent scholarship. So do major sheet music publishers.
