Lithuanian National Opera and Ballet Theatre has removed Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet and Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring from its repertoire.

The statement reads: LNOBT decided to follow the recommendation of the Ministry of Culture and temporarily, until the end of hostilities in Ukraine, refrain from public presentations of works by Russian authors, because culture in Russia is too closely associated with the aggressive politics of this country.

Oleksandr Tkachenko, the Minister of Culture of Ukraine, also requested this while addressing the world cultural community. We hope that LNOBT’s audience will understand the geopolitical situation and support our decision, especially since instead of rejected works, we will show ballets that are very popular with the audience.

    100 % right decision.

A country that used to have a lot of charachter turning into yet another dull woke misery. Why do so many want to be the same, poor version of something nobody likes?

  • Robert Holmén says:

This should not be viewed as a loss for audiences.

While Stravinsky and Prokofiev may be undeserving of this temporary G.P. on their works, there are many other neglected composers who were undeserving of being neglected and can now be brought up to fill the gaps.

A win for the audience. They’re not going to forget the warhorses because they heard something unfamiliar.

Tell me how Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet and Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring are “too closely associated with the aggressive politics” of Russia.

  • G says:

I always knew that Igor and Sergey were supporters of Russia’s war in Ukraine. It’s only right that their reputation should suffer for their beliefs.

    …. Are you serious?!?!

    • Potter Herald says:

They just can’t play this music – loose intonation in Prokofiev and not able to count 2/16, 3/16 in Sacre. Normal thing for Vilnius! All good players are playing in good orchestras without this stupidity.
More of “job” for this kind of idiocy:
-K and V Petrenko – same Russians as Prokofiev and Stravinsky
-Tchaikovsky (public statements on supporting the war in NY Times magazine)
      -vodka
      -Kandinsky, Malevitch, Chagall?
-no Waltz n.2 in movies and for Andre Rieu
-destroy Stravinsky, Dyagilev and Brodsky tombs in Venice
-Michael Jackson visited Moscow in 1993. Also a supporter

Ballet company in Estonia is also clisely connected with fascist regime in their country only they have no composers of such quality as Prokofiev and Stravinsky. With this decision they only show how they serve the plivy of war and Nato enlargement.

During the Second World War, the Metropolitan Opera stopped performing MADAME BUTTERFLY, which is set in Japan.

There was no such restriction for Wagner’s RING operas.
