The Burgtheater director Martin Kusej announced today that he is stepping down after one term.

‘Myself and the entire Burgtheater were maneuvered into an unspeakable, damaging situation by the late and lengthy decision-making process on the future of the Burgtheater management,’ he said.

No sooner were the words out of his mouth than Culture Secretary Andrea Mayer said she would present Kušej’s successor tomorrow.

The situation is much the same as the political interference that ousted Dominique Meyer from the Staatsoper.

Vienna is, as Mahler said, a snakepit.

UPDATE: The next Burgtheater director is to be Stefan Bachmann, a Swiss.

Another stunning world artist bullied out by PC politicians who know nothing of art or what audiences need. The man is a genius: now Vienna, too, will get some third rate leader selected more for their Identity than their vision.

This is real bad news — it might give him more time to meddle with operas.
