Not at all controversial! Victor is using innuendo to spread a malicious rumour that was put to rest more than a decade ago after Pletnev’s career had suffered from what was later proved as a totally false allegation. This has been raised here before and I thought NL had banned future discussion.
Kawai generously supplied the Shigeru-Kawai EX concert grand for all three rounds of the Dudley International Piano Competition recently (www.dipc.org.uk) plus £3000 prize money. The piano sounded magnificent in Birmingham’s Symphony Hall
And the contestants I spoke with all spoke highly of the instrument
Kawai is a good piano, and if Pletnev got one that was custom-made at the factory, then $140,000 seems pretty reasonable.
Earl Wild, who knew something about pianos, dropped Baldwin in favor of Kawai.
Piano fan is not quite correct. As the superb Earl Wild writes in his biography, he absolutely loved his Baldwin piano. He did not drop Baldwin. Indeed, it is unlikely he would have changed but Baldwin went bust and so from 2001 for the last four years of his concert life he switched to the Shigeru Kawai. He does add, though, that he was pleased with the Kawai.
